NV-TF1 member Justin Evans retrieves "Sydney" after Sydney successfully located a survivor that was hiddien in some stables in a western barn set.

08/19/08 – FEMA US&R Nevada Task Force 1s’ K9 Unit went to Universal Studios in California. They met up with members of California Task Force 5, CA-TF6 and CA-TF2 who had extended an invitation to NV-TF1 to join them for a day of training.

Occupant says her air conditioner stopped working so she called the landlord who came a short time later. She said she smelled something but thought it was bug spray. Landlord came to front door and noticed smoke beginning to come out around air conditioner on roof of unit.

This weekend, the National Weather Service is forecasting possible thunderstorm activity. This is the beginning of monsoon season and with it comes thunderstorms with lightning and flash flooding. Lightning associated with thunderstorms can be deadly. According to the National Weather Service, summer is the peak time for thunderstorm activity. In the United States an average of 67 people are killed each year by lightning.

It may be difficult to imagine on a day when it is clear with temperatures in the 100’s, but on July 8, 1999, Las Vegas was ravaged by a 100 year flood. That flood caused millions of dollars in damage and was responsible for one death. Although flash floods can occur at any time of the year, in the desert during July, August and September, flash flooding is more likely because of the “monsoon winds.” Monsoons are winds that come from the southeast and the Gulf of Mexico. Warm moist air that collides with our desert air and the lifting effect of the mountains creates thunderstorms, which can dump large amounts of water in a short amount of time. Although it is not likely that we will see the effects of a monsoon over the next week or two, you should still be aware of the safety and preparedness precautions. Storms can form in as little as 15 minutes, just as it did in 1999, and catch you off guard. Here is some information you can use:

Upon being activated, NVTF-1 members respond to NVTF-1 Headquarters to complete forms, be issued some equipment, and receive a brief physical prior to their deployment.
